Private pay counseling services refer to mental health treatment in which clients pay directly for their sessions without relying on insurance coverage.
One of the primary advantages of private pay counseling is increased privacy and confidentiality. When insurance companies are involved, the mental health provider is required to submit insurance claims in order to receive payment for services. These claims provide an insurance company access to the client's mental health diagnosis, number of counseling services, and frequency of counseling services.
In addition, the insurance company may request a client's mental health records at any time when conducting an audit of the mental health therapist or to complete other administrative functions.
With private pay, the therapist-patient relationship remains confidential, ensuring that personal information is not shared with insurance companies.
While private pay counseling comes with a higher upfront cost, some clients prefer private pay for the benefit of added confidentiality.
